Horses require four basic nutrients: water, carbohydrates, vitamins & minerals and fats. These nutrients are required for proper cellular and whole-body system functioning in the horse. Certain levels/quantities and nutrients as well as key
essential nutrients are needed for the horse’s well-being, comfort, and performance. Since horses are a herbivore and feed primarily on plants, our dietary assessments will focus on forage (hay, pasture, beet pulp), concentrates (grains, feeds) and any mineral/vitamin supplements that may be fed. “Balancing the ration” is essentially checking to ensure that the nutrients in the horse’s food are meeting basic, scientifically proven requirements - tempered by the owner’s concerns about feeding practices, horse behavior, level of performance, age, and clinical conditions. The nutritional assessment and follow-up recommendations are not meant to make the owner’s life harder and more costly, but rather identify what your horse needs, providing options, and leaving out what’s not needed like costly supplements or mixes from the ration. -
